From our Yelp reviews:

Keep your bike safe!

New York is a tough place.

Bikes get stolen all the time, but if you take the proper precautions, it doesn't have to happen to you.

Tips on locking a bike

The most important thing to do:
Lock your bike thoroughly every time you leave it anywhere, even for a minute!
Maybe this is obvious, but we hear stories all the time of folks who left their bikes for less than a minute and came back to find them gone.

Lock to something secure!
Make sure it can't move, be cut, the lock won't slide over the top, etc.

Some things are good to lock to:
Bike racks (duh)
Parking meters*
Street signs* (but see below)
And some are not so good:
Scaffolding. Crossbars can easily be unbolted. Scaffolding is sometimes removed.
Signposts with no sign on top. Your bike can be lifted up and off the top of the post.
Trees. They don't like being jostled or scraped, and they're easy to cut down.

*Officially, it's not legal to lock to parking meters and street signs, but it's almost never a problem.

Lock everything. Frame, wheels, saddle, whatever else you can get.

Lock up near other bikes. Thieves will go for the easiest target, not the most desirable.

Don't keep your bike locked up outside at night if you can avoid it.

A tough city requires a tough lock.

There are lots of different kinds of locks, some better than others.

  • Chain locks are the strongest in general. Weight is the big downside.
  • Cable locks offer the most versatility and lightest weight, but also the least security.
  • U-Locks are probably the best solution for most people, especially used in conjunction with a cable.

We stock a selection of Kryptonite locks, including these:

New York Lock
STD U-Lock

Evolution Series 4 and
Series 4 Mini U-locks

Evolution Series 2 U-locks,
with and without flex cable

New York Chains in 3.25' and 5.5' lengths,
and the formidable Fahgeddaboudit chain and lock.

There are plenty of other locks out there, but New York has one of the worst bike theft rates in the US. Don't take a chance with your bike. We only carry the locks we would trust with our own bikes, and we'll be glad to help you pick the one that's best for yours.

Autumn brings great riding weather, and great scenery.

However, it also brings more free time around the shop. Our wait for repairs is shorter than it's been in months. This is a good time to get your bike checked out and prepped for winter. Some suggestions:

  • Wider tires make it easy to keep riding through all kinds of weather.
  • Fenders help keep you dry and warm.
  • New cables and housing, brake pads, and thorough lubrication will keep you rolling smooth until spring.
