Scott brought in this old Raleigh, which I think is a Sports. The original color, which I found a bit of on the steerer tube, was a brownish gold metallic. Scott has had it refinished in a really pretty dark bronze, with Honjo fenders and a few other parts to match.
I think this is one of the prettiest frames I've seen.
The finished build is pretty similar to what the bike would have looked like originally.
Scott wanted 700C wheels instead of the original 26" x 13/8, so the clearances are pretty tight. Honestly, they're a little too tight, so the fender lines don't look perfect. However, the wheels I built sure are pretty.
For some reason, this chainguard makes me think of Converse All-Stars.
Scott went with a Brooks B33 saddle, which I think looks about right. The bike would have had a Brooks, of course, but it might not have been a leather one originally.
This build was a lot of fun. Every part of it was a challenge to make everything fit just right. The dynamo wheel is a couple of millimeters from the fender.
The light housing is just a few millimeters from the brake arm.
I had to mill down the back of the crank arm to get it to fit on a short enough bottom bracket that I could attach the chainguard. Everything there is even closer together than it looks!
And the chain is seriously close to the bolts holding the chainguard in place. Also note the spring-loaded bolt that allows the rear fender to move forward enough to let the wheel out.
Thanks Scott! |
Autumn brings great riding weather, and great scenery. However, it also brings more free time around the shop. Our wait for repairs is shorter than it's been in months. This is a good time to get your bike checked out and prepped for winter. Some suggestions:
